Here comes spring! Time to start getting prepped for growing season!

A few things to start thinking about:

1) Moving compost – Saturday work days are starting up again on March 8. We would like to get some wood chips and compost moved onto the planting beds ASAP. The goal is to have snow peas planted by March 17. The town has left the wood chips and compost inside the gate near the garden, but we need wheelbarrow power to get it on the rows. Weather permitting. I will try to send updates or reach out if interested. Janet will also be posting weather updates on the Facebook site.

2) Fence repairs – The fence is in need of repair. Zip ties have gotten old and broken, so we need to secure it again. Reach out if you would like to be on this team.

3) Start seedlings at home – If you have interest in doing some seedling starts in your home to transfer to the garden later – we would love your help! Janet is requesting organic seeds only and recommends the Hudson Valley Seed Co., as these are acclimated to area conditions. Any large heirloom tomato varieties (NOT cherry tomato) would be appreciated. Eggplant, small squash, green peppers are okay too. It doesn’t have to be from HVSC – but please organic and non GMO. Grow in your home and then transfer to GOH when they are big enough and ready to go outside – April May depending on weather.

Note that the Field Library has a program to offer seeds to patrons. Learn more!

As always, please reach out with any questions. Thanks for your help!

The Garden of Hope at Willow Park: Curry St. & Tulip St. in Yorktown grows hundreds of pounds of fresh produce each season for our Pantry and other pantries supporting the local community.

If you’re willing and able to help, join the church’s Realm group.
