For the two pantries in August our client volume stayed at the “new normal” of 220-225, with a total of 450 families (1930 individuals) for the month. We benefited from great Garden of Hope produce, which is healthier for our clients and reduces the volume of canned fruits and vegetables we need to stock and distribute. The changes to federal funding and sourcing of food for food banks is beginning to show up at Feeding Westchester; many fewer items are free to us than in the past five years.
August also included our annual school supply distribution, and we are so grateful for the folks who helped prepare and distribute the supplies in parallel to the food distribution on the same day. We helped roughly 200 children from pre-K through high school, from well over 100 families — which means that nearly half the families who came to the pantry on that day had at least one child in their house that needed the supplies. To be able to have your supplies on the first day of school is an enormous confidence booster for children, and we are so glad to be able to help.
As ever, we are grateful for the support of the congregation and community in the form of food and school supply donations, monetary support, and most of all our volunteers, without whom we could not “do what we do”.
Noting the item of the month and bringing in some supplies can help us “fill the gaps.”
You can drop off items any time in the labeled bins near the red double doors at the back of the church building.
