One way to practice stewardship of the earth is to support farms either by shopping directly at the farm or through Community Supported Agriculture (CSA) programs. A CSA program invites members of the community to purchase “shares” in the produce, usually in January. Your share purchase allows the farmer to invest in crops for the season. Once the farm starts to produce, shareholders (CSA members) receive a “share,” usually each week. Variations of this include the program at Fable Farm (listed below), where you are invited to purchase a debit card that can be used to buy anything in the farm market. At Fable this includes cheese, meat and fruit that has been locally produced, not just at Fable Farm.
