Music, community, and a place to gather in Yorktown Heights
The Agapé Music Center is a community music center in Yorktown Heights for people from Westchester and Putnam counties and beyond. It’s a “Third Place” to spend time with neighbors and friends who love music and want more of it in their lives. We host concerts, open mic nights, jam sessions, classes, and group music programs for people of every age and experience levels. No musical background is required. See what’s coming up below.

What we do:
The Agapé Music Center uses the connective power of music as a means of bringing people together. Our programs give neighbors a regular reason to get out of the house, meet people, and take part in something with others, whether that means performing, learning, or listening. It’s a place where parents can come share music with their children, a place where you can jump into a workshop once, or come once a week. It’s a place where established musical groups, amateur to professional, can find a rehearsal space where they can create, and it’s a place where there’s something wonderful for
you to listen to if you can’t carry a tune in a bucket (or just don’t want to).

Why “A Third Place”?
Most of us split our time between home and work. A “third place” is everywhere else: the spots where you run into the same people week after week, catch up, and get to know each other a little better each time. Sociologist Ray Oldenburg coined the term, and his examples were cafés, barbershops, pubs, and community halls. A lot of those places are harder to find these days, and plenty of us feel the difference.
Music gives people a reason to gather. It’s easier to strike up a conversation with the person next to you at a drum circle than with a stranger in a waiting room. Whether you’re singing, playing, or tapping your foot in the back row, you’re part of the same thing as everyone else in the room. Come a few times and you’ll start recognizing faces. Come a few more and they’ll start recognizing yours.
Why Agapé
The ancient Greeks had several words for love. Eros was romantic love, philia was friendship, and storge was the bond within families. Agapé was the widest type of love: goodwill extended to everyone, including people you haven’t met yet, with no strings attached. How do you say Agapé? It’s ah-GAH-pay (not uh-GAPE).
Agapé is at the center of all our programming. You don’t need to audition, know anyone, or own an instrument to walk in the door. Many of our programs are free, and for the ones that aren’t, scholarships, volunteer opportunities, and sliding-scale pricing are available, so cost doesn’t decide who gets to take part.
Open to everyone
The Agapé Music Center is open to all, regardless of race, color, sex, gender identity, sexual orientation, or religious affiliation.
Get involved
The Agapé Music Center is just getting started. Come to a concert, try a workshop, or bring your group in to rehearse. We also rely on volunteers for setup, sound and tech, hospitality, and event support. If you like being behind the scenes, we’d love your help. If you’re interested in renting a performance or rehearsal space, please email Garrett Artman at garrett@fpcyorktown.org.
