This summer, seven of us traveled to Montreat, North Carolina, for the Presbyterian Association of Musicians’ Worship and Music Conference. For me, it was less about doing music and more about rediscovering why we make music in the first place.
Montreat is surrounded by mountains and streams, and creation seems to sing on its own there. In my classes, I was reminded that creation isn’t just what we see in nature—it’s also the friendships we form, the music we share, and the faith that binds us together. I hiked the trails, yes, but I also found creation alive in conversations, in laughter, and in the rhythm of a drum circle.
One of the most moving moments came during a hymn sing led by Ana Hernández. With simple rounds, hymns, and chants, she drew us into something beautiful—not flashy, not grand, but authentic. It was a powerful reminder that creation often speaks in the small and simple things.
And here’s the surprising part: I wasn’t in a single performing ensemble all week. At a music conference, you’d expect rehearsals, concerts, and over-packed schedules. Instead, I found freedom in simply listening, watching friends create art, and joining my voice to a hymn sung with joy. It was breathtaking to discover that musical creation doesn’t have to mean performance. Sometimes, it’s a conversation, a class discussion, or even just singing a hymn loudly enough to make it yours.
My biggest takeaway is this: creation is happening all around us, in ways we might overlook when we’re busy making music perfect. It isn’t about anxious noise, it’s about joyful noise. Montreat gave me space to remember why I love this work in the first place: because music, in all its forms, points us back to Creation.
