Tuesday mornings from 10:00 AM to 11:30 AM EST we’ll be reading The Great Spiritual Migration: How the World’s Largest Religion is Seeking a Better Way to be Christian by Brian D. McLaren. Each week we’ll be watch a short video and discuss about one chapter a week of this ten-chapter book.
McLaren is a provocative writer. This book describes what he sees as three profound shifts that are changing our faith. These shifts are described on his website:
- Spiritually, growing numbers of Christians are moving away from defining themselves by lists of beliefs and toward a way of life defined by love
- Theologically, believers are increasingly rejecting the image of God as a violent Supreme Being and embracing the image of God as the renewing Spirit at work in our world for the common good
- Missionally, the faithful are identifying less with organized religion and more with organizing religion—spiritual activists dedicated to healing the planet, building peace, overcoming poverty and injustice, and collaborating with other faiths to ensure a better future for all of us

Our continuing studies:
On Sunday mornings we’ll start at 8:45 AM and we’ll be discussing The Soul of a Pilgrim.
On Thursday January 21 at 10:00 AM we began a 12-week study of On Our Way, a book edited by Dorothy C. Bass and Susan R. Biehl. We’re watching a series of videos based on the book by the same name. Purchasing the book is not necessary to join the discussions. The book focuses on several practices. From the description at The Work of the People:
What makes a good life? Wrestling with questions about how to live your life is part of being human. These films were created in accompaniment to the book project On Our Way: Christian Practices for Living a Whole Life. The authors are passionate about practicing their faith in the real world, for the good of all, and in response to God’s presence. They invite you to join them in exploring a way of life that is rooted in Christian wisdom while also moving toward the future, a way of life overflowing with God’s justice, mercy, and love.
