Sunday Morning Adult Education – The Lectionary 101

Lectionary? What’s a lectionary, you might ask? Please join us on Sunday mornings starting in January to find out.

We’ll learn what a lectionary is, why you might need one, and how it relates to our Sunday morning worship (or not!). We’ll talk about how we got the lectionary that is used on Sunday, who uses it, and what other lectionaries there are.

On the last Sunday in January, Connie Knapp will be preaching. The Adult Ed hour will be a sermon “talk back.” Connie will talk about why she chose the passages she chose and how the service is built around the Scripture passage(s).

If you would like to “read ahead,” here are the lectionary readings for January:

Second Sunday after the Epiphany—January 14

1 Samuel 3:1–10 (11–20)

Psalm 139:1–6, 13–18

1 Corinthians 6:12–20

John 1:43–51

Third Sunday after the Epiphany—January 21

Jonah 3:1–5, 10

Psalm 62:5–12

1 Corinthians 7:29–31

Mark 1:14–20

Fourth Sunday after the Epiphany—January 28

Deuteronomy 18:15–20

Psalm 111

1 Corinthians 8:1–13

Mark 1:21–28

In February we will continue looking at Scripture, taking theologian Karl Barth’s advice. In an article in Time magazine in 1963, Barth recalled “that 40 years ago he advised young theologians ‘to take your Bible and take your newspaper, and read both. But interpret newspapers from your Bible.'”  So bring your favorite source of news, digital or printed, and maybe your favorite translation of the Bible. Let’s talk about what you’ve read and how the lectionary readings for the day help us interpret the day’s news. Here are the readings for the first two Sundays in February:

Fifth Sunday after the Epiphany—February 4, 2018

Isaiah 40:21–31

Psalm 147:1–11, 20c

1 Corinthians 9:16–23

Mark 1:29–39

Transfiguration of the Lord—February 11

2 Kings 2:1–12

Psalm 50:1–6

2 Corinthians 4:3–6

Mark 9:2–9

You don’t have to attend every session to get a lot out of the study!
  • The men’s breakfast will be held on Saturday February 3 in Fellowship Hall at 7:30 AM.
  • Our Thursday morning 10 – 11:30 AM class will study Half Truths: The Lord Helps Those Who Help Themselves and other Things the Bible Doesn’t Say  with Adam Hamilton Join us at any time -you don’t have to attend every session.
  • We are currently running two sessions of Disciple II Bible study classes, one on Tuesday morning and one on Wednesday evening. Please let Tami, Chip or Connie know if you are interested in the first Disciple course, Disciple I. We are hoping to schedule a class soon, based on interest.
