Community Service Opportunities

The First Presbyterian Church of Yorktown often has opportunities for community service. Current opportunities are listed below.

Yorktown High School students may want to reference the High School’s community service page to understand the School’s process for student community service.

Home Front Building Project – May 5, 2012

On Saturday, May 5th,  the Church is planning to repair a home for a member of our community.  This project is organized through Home Front, “a community-based, volunteer-driven home repair program that provides FREE repairs to low-income homeowners, thus enabling them to remain in their homes with an improved quality of life.”  Skills needs range from typical home maintenance activities such as painting and yard work to professional electrical, plumbing, and carpentry work.  We are currently surveying the skills available to determine what we can take on.  Please take the survey and contact our church office if you are interested.

Spring Cleanup – May 5, 2012

Also on May 5th, the Church will be conducting its annual spring cleanup day.  This involves inside (cleaning) and outside (sweeping, raking, cleaning out flower beds, etc.) work on the Church grounds. To participate in this effort, just show up at the Church on Saturday, May 5th.  For more information, contact our church office.

Food Pantry – Twice a Month

The Church operates a food pantry on two Saturday mornings each month, usually on the second and fourth Saturdays of the month.  Adults and teenagers are invited to join us at 8am to help prepare food bags, distribute the food, and help recipients carry bags to their cars.  Just show up at the Church any Food Pantry morning.

Serving Dinner at the Jan Peek House – Once a Month

Jan Peek House in Peekskill is a shelter for 19 homeless men and women, run by an organization named Caring for the Homeless of Peekskill (CHOP). Each month, on the 4th Saturday of the month, we provide dinner at the Jan Peek House. It is rewarding to share food and conversation with the residents and it is an important part of our congregation’s ministry to the community. To help serve a dinner, contact Bud Coccodrilli (245-6475).

Preparing a Meal for the Noontime Meal Program in Peekskill – Once a Month

Our church serves lunch monthly as part of the Noontime Meal program run by the Salvation Army in Peekskill. To participate, call Squeegee Mills at 845-621-3178.

The Knit Togethers

Interested in knitting? Come join The Knit Togethers, a group of women who meet twice a month to knit and crochet baby items and blankets for community groups.  Or knit with The Prayer Shawl Group, which knits blankets for newly-baptized babies, and prayer shawls.  The Prayer Shawl Group also meets twice a month.  See our Women’s Fellowship page for the up-to-date schedule.
